Lymphedema

Lymphedema can occur following breast cancer surgery when the axillary lymph nodes have been dissected. Although there is no cure, lymphedema can be successfully managed. Treatment is designed to meet the individual needs of each patients and may include:

Patient Education - information addressing extremity protection, skin care, lymphatic massage, compression bandaging, compression garments, exercise, compression pumps is available and provided, depending on the patient's individual needs.

Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) - application of manual techniques designed to restore pressure balance between blood vessels and lymph vessels.

Compression bandaging and garments - application of external pressure on the upper extremity to support the elasticity of the skin and underlying vessels

Exercise/aerobic conditioning - patient guidance in program designed to improve aerobic capacity and lymph flow.

Abdominal Surgeries

Following a hysterectomy, the removal of ovarian cysts or a hernia repair, abdominal muscle weakness may occur. Posture correction, strengthening exercises, aerobic conditioning, wound/skin care, and energy saving suggestions are included in treatment.

Prenatal and Postnatal Rehabilitation

LAPT programs specifically address your prenatal and postnatal joint and muscle concerns.

Treatment consisting of education in posture, body mechanics, and supportive devices, such as corsets, are very effective in relieving back pain during pregnancy.

Safe stretching and strengthening techniques are also important aspects that are included in treatment.
